Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF)

Programs

The safety of passengers and aircraft is our primary concern at the PDX Fire Department. We purchase and train with some of the latest technology in ARFF to continually improve our skills and abilities. As part of this specialized training, we participate in live-fire exercises, required annually by the Federal Aviation Administration. A high-tech aircraft "mock-up" for our drill pit area allows live (practice) aircraft fires using propane, liquid petroleum, or class-A materials. The aircraft mock-up gives firefighters realistic fires to extinguish on engines, wheel assemblies, cargo compartments, and passenger areas in many different scenarios.

As aviation technology changes, we intend to maintain a high level of expertise in ARFF and learn to adapt and adjust our techniques.
